Hotmail users can not chat with their Facebook friends within the Hotmail window

Microsoft recently reached a milestone and celebrated the 15th anniversary of Hotmail, the popular free web-based e-mail service. Officially launched in November 1996, Windows Live Hotmail has become one of the major corner stones of the internet and has significantly transformed the way individuals communicate with one another.

“We are happy to celebrate a momentous occasion as Hotmail turns 15 and Microsoft is dedicated to continue providing its users with innovative technology that will make communication easier and more interactive for everyone,” said Mae Moreno, Windows Client Product Manager, Microsoft Philippines.

Since its launch, Windows Live Hotmail has evolved into a more advanced email service that is faster, simpler and safer. With significant recent enhancements – all based on user feedback – Hotmail is the e-mail that millions of consumers use to keep in touch with close contacts and get more done.  The new Hotmail is designed to optimized efficiency: cutting clutter, enabling users to execute common tasks in fewer steps, and seamlessly harnessing the power the cloud to make sending photos and working with Office documents easy.

On top of these developments, Hotmail has also been optimized to work better for users on the go. Today, Hotmail is designed for compatibility with different mobile operating systems – whether Windows Phone 7 or Apple’s iOS – where users can easily sync e-mail, calendar and contacts, allowing them to stay connected to Hotmail from virtually anywhere.

Users can chat with Facebook friends and watch videos linked from YouTube, Hulu and many other services right within the email interface and message, without the need to open multiple tabs or windows.

Hotmail is also equipped with new features such as the conversation view where users can select the option from the “Arrange By” menu at the top of your message list, and the “Sweep” menu which helps users get rid of unwanted email quickly and easily archive old messages and unsubscribe from pesky newsletters with just a few clicks.

Furthermore, users are empowered to have quicker access to their inboxes with Internet Explorer 9, by just dragging the Hotmail icon to the Windows 7 taskbar bringing e-mails closer to its users in just a click of a button.

“Hotmail has definitely come a long way since its introduction and it certainly has significantly developed the way we communicate,” said Chay Mondejar-Saputil, Managing Director, Chimes Digital Marketing Solutions. “With Windows Live Hotmail today, Filipinos are empowered to accomplish more and stay connected anytime, anywhere, and with the confidence that we are using a platform that is safe and secure.”

“There have been significant developments in the way users communicate with one another and Microsoft listened to its consumers speak to learn about the ways it can enhance and develop its technologies to best suit its users’ needs,” said Moreno.

“Today, Windows Live Hotmail has evolved into the largest free e-mail service with 360 million unique users per month and users are assured that we are committed to continue bringing innovation in the years to come,” Moreno concluded.
