Happy 20th Birthday Internet! Your father, Sir Tim Berners-Lee christened August 6, 1991 as the day we all got a look at you as the first website was published.

Why, look at what you’ve become in the last 20 years! We remember you when you were just a few pages with photos and hyperlinks; the melodic tones of the dial-up modem contacting the ISP. Thank God, you outgrew your obsession with MIDI music and those annoying animated gifs in the late 90’s. We used to call you the World Wide Web or the Information Super Highway. Now you’re simply the Internet or ‘Net.

Look at you now! How you’ve grown from those days where people would scoff at you and think of you as a passing fad to become an indispensable tool for everyday life. In just 20 years, people have come to rely on you for their shopping, banking, research, and even entertainment. For the longest time, you’ve been stuck on desktops with PCs and laptops at home or the office but now you can be seen everywhere, in coffee shops, malls, on tablets, and mobile phones.

Belated Happy Birthday, Internet! Here’s to more than just another 20 years!
