Unveiled at last year’s Frankfurt Auto Show, the BMW i3 Concept is an all-electric vehicle that was built and bred for the city. According to Motor Authority, the i3 has a 167HP electric motor running the rear axle with an effective range of 93 miles.

Now here at Techindustriya, we wouldn’t mind a car story now and again but our sister site, Autoindustriya already covers that and its sports-bred, hybrid brother, the i8 Concept. What is interesting about the BMW i3 is that it is getting its own smartphone app.

While you might think that the app will only work as an interactive brochure for the vehicle, what Motor Authority is saying is that the app will be fully integrated with the i3. The app will show the level of charge of the vehicle as well as the range of the vehicle. You will also be able to program routes from the app which is automatically transferred to the GPS in the i3. You will also be able to set the charging times to take advantage of off-peak rates.

It also would be conceivable that with further updates, you won’t need a physical key to the i3 as your smartphone will be able to lock/unlock the doors as well as start the engine as most keyless vehicles work these days.

Current images of the app shows an iOS interface, it wouldn’t be hard to believe that an Android app is also in the works especially as the growth of the Android market steadily rises.
