Melbourne-based Crumpler actually started out with bags designed for bike messengers in co-founders David Roper and Will Miller’s Minuteman Messengers bike courier company. The durable canvas bags soon became popular and attracted commercial demand, prompting the company to make different sizes and colors. Since its messenger bag days, the company has since expanded its product range to include camera bags, laptop bags, and travel bags.

The new 2012 “Embarrasment” series messenger-style laptop bag is the third generation since its first release in the Philippine-market. I’ve personally used the first generation Considerable Embarrassment for more than three years since 2007. The first major improvement is the clamp lock on the strap adjuster. I always had problems with strap “adjusting” itself automatically before when carrying heavier weights. The wider strap and the also makes the bag more comfortable to carry around coupled with the firmer shoulder pad for extra support.

Another unique feature is what Crumpler calls the “Ambidextrous Third Leg Stabilizer” which is an extra strap attached to the shoulder pad which hooks on either arm to have the bag hang perfectly behind your back. I personally don’t recommend this while walking on the street; you might end up with a lighter bag afterwards. Although the double-Velcro secured main flap with dual quick release straps would take more effort to open.

Storage is no stranger to Crumpler bags; starting with the zippered front-pocket mini office organizer with key loop which can hold your pens, notepad, car organizers, iPod, and whatever you think of stuffing inside the spacious pocket. Another zippered side pocket just in front of it allows you to put in things that might need easier access.

In the main-compartment, an integrated padded laptop sleeve fits a widescreen 15-inch laptop snugly with full-width Velcro-fastened flag to secure it in place. It also comes with two internal side pockets that flank the Velcro-fastened center pocket. It doesn’t stop there, there’s still about a four to five inches of storage space in-between the pockets and the laptop sleeve where you can actually fit a consumer DSLR camera with lens attached, or an umbrella and jacket to keep you dry in case it rains.

Crumpers are tough bags as personally experienced. I’ve been able to carry three Macbook Pros in my old bag, two 15-inchers and a 13-inch. And I have no doubt about this new one doing the same. The unique design and colors of their bags make them look unassuming as laptop bags. The different color combinations like gunmetal/yellow, beech/orange, and navy/red make it attractive for young, active and creative people. However, a black/gunmetal color variant is available for the more serious environment.

If you’re looking for a durable and stylish 15-inch laptop bag that fits nearly everything, Crumpler’s Considerable Embarrassment is a sure winner, at a slightly premium price though. The sleek styling and amount of storage pockets are more than enough convincing for students, creative professionals and the modern entrepreneur. The new 2012 Crumper Considerable Embarrassment retails for Php6,450 and is available at Crumpler Concept Stores in Bonfacio High Street, Trinoma, SM Megamall, and Robinson’s Ermita; and select Apple Premium Reseller stores.
