Whether we like it or not, social media has become a big part of our daily lives. We share dozens of photos and videos with our friends and relatives and sometimes it can be a hassle to manually share all of them. Seagate has tried to solve this problem by introducing it’s Backup Plus portable drive that comes bundled with social media backup solutions for easy sharing and archiving.
We managed to get a 500GB Backup Plus to review and the results are quite good. The storage device comes with an 18″ USB 3.0 cable that speeds up data transfer while also being backwards compatible with USB 2.0 slots. To test out the capabilities of the drive we use our Big and Small files test using FastCopy to get our figures. We transferred one 6.92 GB file for the Big and a 4.71 GB folder containing a few hundred music files for the Small.
For the Big file using USB 2.0 we got an average of 21.95 MB/s in 323.13 sec to Write and 27.38 MB/s in 258.95 sec to Read. The Small file got an average of 21.23 MB/s in 227.37 sec to Write and 27.46MB/s in 175.77 sec to Read.
When we used USB 3.0 we had an average of 69.08 MB/s in 102.66 sec to Write and 63.64 MB/s 111.43 sec to Read for the Big file. For the Small file we got 65.16 MB/s in 74.05 sec to Write and 50.07 MB/s in 96.39 sec to Read.
That’s a pretty big increase from USB 2.0 to 3.0 so to make full use of your portable drive use a USB 3.0 slot.
The drive itself looks quite clean in its plastic case with a brushed metal finished. It doesn’t feel too sturdy though. The LED indicating use is located on top of the drive unlike other brands. Though the drive lacks any rubber feet so it’s prone to accidental sliding and may get scratched easily. The Backup Plus 500GB retails at PhP 4,100, relatively the same price as other drives of the same size. The 1TB version retails at PhP 5,495.
The drive also comes with a bundled program called Seagate Dashboard that makes sharing and backing up easier. The program streamlines the process and prompts you to log-in to your desired social media site to either share content on your drive or to archive data from the social media site. The social media sites available are Facebook, Flickr, and Youtube.
Overall the drive itself is pretty solid, files are transferred quickly and consistently, and the Dashboard just makes things easier for users who aren’t too techy but still want to backup their data.
Pro: Light, quick, LED on top, easy to use.
Cons: No rubber feet to prevent accidental sliding. Plastic could be a bit sturdier.
