Just when you thought you were getting used to the microSIM, Globe, this month, is introducing NanoSIM in its SIM line up.

The NanoSIM is 40% smaller than the already tiny microSIM. It measures 12.3mm wide, 8.8mm high, and .67mm thick.

“Once again, Globe pioneers in bringing the latest technologies to Filipino mobile phone users as we offer the revolutionary Nano-SIMs in our Globe Stores with the availability of newer smartphone models using this type of SIM very soon. With the Nano-SIM and its stunning features and specifications, our smartphone experience will definitely be taken to another level,” said Martha Sazon, Head of Globe Postpaid.

Globe seems pretty bullish with the nanoSIM.

Globe has ordered as much as 5x more Nano-SIMs than its regular SIM stocks, anticipating high customer demand when smartphones running on Nano-SIMs are offered in the market.

Globe seem pretty confident that the first phone or phones will be flying off the shelves.

The real news here is not the availability of the new SIM size but their anticipation of an upcoming phone that will utilize the new SIM spec. Currently, there are no mobile phones, smart or feature, that uses nanoSIM.

Going behind the scenes on the nanoSIM, just a few months ago, Apple won against the combined might of Nokia, RIM, and Motorola Mobility over the nanoSIM specs. With this in mind, it is a fair assumption that Apple will be the first — or at least one of the first — to release a device that will use nanoSIM. And with the announced Apple press conference next week, we also fairly assume that the Cupertino company will announce their new iPhone.

What we speculate here, with the ramped up demand for the new SIM form factor by Globe this early, the imminent launch of Apple’s new iPhone, can we expect the that the new iPhone will be be available locally shortly after its launch? Will Globe get the exclusivity for the smartphone again? I guess we won’t have to wait long to find out.
