Its spring cleaning season once again at Google and the company has merged and/or removed various features. This cleaning spree is to simplify and streamline their services for a better user experience.
Starting October 2, AdSense for Feeds will begin to be retired and will be formally closed on December 3. AdSense for Feeds was a feature to let publishers earn revenue by placing ads on their RSS feeds. Classic Plus, a Google Search feature that allowed users to change the background on Google.com through uploaded or selected images. Users won’t be able to upload images starting October 16 and will be formally shutdown in November. Google storage in Picasa and Drive will be consolidated over the next few months, which will give free users five GB of storage across both services. Spreadsheet Gadgets allowed users to add customized features to Google Spreadsheets will be slowly turned off next year as most popular gadgets have already been integrated into charts in spreadsheets.
For Google News readers, starting on October 15, the company will stop issuing and displaying Google News Badges and Recommended Sections. Google News readers will still be able to tailor their experience with custom sections and news frequency. Insights for Search and Google Trends have been merged into a single Google Trends service. Support for Trends for Websites, which allowed users to compare traffic between different websites, will be dropped. The Places Directory, an Android app that help people find nearby places of interest has been removed from Google Play and the site will be brought down as its features are available on Google Maps for Mobile. The company has introduced +1 Reports in Webmaster Tools to measure Google+ activity on their pages. The standalone version will be discontinued on November 14 as they will be available in Google Analytics.
