After heavy floods hit Thailand last year, hard disk drive (HDD) shortages popped up as electronics manufacturers staggered to recover, but according to IHS iSuppli the industry has managed to fully recover and is ready to bounce back as HDD shipments are expected to hit an all time high.
According to the group, internal use HDD shipments are expected to reach 524 million units, an increase of 4.3% from last year. By 2016, shipments are estimated to reach 575.1 million units. Both Windows 8 and the rise of Ultrabooks are major drivers for the rise in the industry that is expected to continue until at least 2016. Prices however won’t be going down anytime soon and expectations are that it will last until 2014.
