Google has announced that its standalone Google Maps app is now available for iOS devices at the Apple App Store. Apple had previously removed pre-installed Google apps on the new iOS 6, which included YouTube and Google Maps. Apple’s own Maps app had replaced Google Maps for the iOS 6 update, but had a problematic start which led to Apple execs leaving and whatnot. Google had previously announced that they were hard at work revamping their app for better navigation.
The new app looks sharper, displays more map on screen, with rotating 2D and 3D vector-based maps that load quickly. They’ve also included voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation and live traffic conditions. To help developers, they’ve also released Google Maps SDK for iOS to build better and more innovative apps. The new Google Maps app is available for iOS 5.1 and higher.
