After refraining from releasing a Windows tablet during the first wave, HTC is reportedly working on a number of tablets to challenge Apple in 2013 according to Bloomberg. The company is rumored to be working on two tablets: a 12-inch tablet and a 7-inch version that can make phone calls. HTC’s tablets are set to run Windows RT on Qualcomm chips. The company has also been considering a Windows 8 devices on Intel chips but found that it would be too costly — around $1,000 a pop.
This partnership could be beneficial to both parties as Microsoft’s own Surface sales have been disappointing and HTC is looking for new opportunities after it lost its share of the Android phone market to Samsung. A 7-inch device would be able to compete against the likes of Apple’s iPad min, Amazon’s Kindle Fire, and Google’s Nexus 7. Add phone call capabilities and it could be a force to reckoned with.
