If you’re reading this then we have successfully survived the end of the world. During the time a few were panicking about the end of the world, Gangnam Style became the first YouTube video to hit 1,000,000,000 views. Think about this for a second, the video lasts for 4:13 so to garner the 1 billion views, the world has collectively spent more than 8,000 years watching the video. The Mayan’s probably didn’t think we’d be watching a video of a horse dance for so long did they.

First posted on July 15, Gangnam Style surpassed Justin Bieber’s “Baby” back in November, which had claimed the most viewed video since it debuted in 2010. By now almost everyone has heard the song after it spawned countless parodies and whatnot.

Psy’s lax stance on copyright issues have helped the song achieve its virality and popularity, but does not bring in the money. The AP reported in early December that a majority of Psy’s $8.1 million earnings come from commercial deals, YouTube ads, and iTunes sales. A big chunk of change from a song barely half a year old.
