Ubuntu starts off the new year with its own countdown with the tagline “So close, you can almost touch it.” The countdown is set to expire on 8AM ET Wednesday, January 2nd. From the looks of it, the company is set to unveil its own mobile touch-based interface. In a Slashdot interview, Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth had informed readers of the company’s plans to bring the OS to mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets, as a way to familiarize users with the Linux-bases operating system.

With Ubuntu 14.04 LTS set to be launched on April 2014, this latest announcement is only a part of the company’s shift towards a touch-friendly operating system. Shuttleworth had previously said that by 14.04 LTS Ubuntu will support smartphones, tablets, TVs and smart screens so only time will tell how they’ll proceed.
