Despite lacking an exhibit booth at CES 2013, Microsoft still made waves as they joined the Samsung press conference to show off the next project Microsoft Research was working on. What was shown was not an exact product, but more of a proof-of-concept, relating to a patent that the company had filed months before.

The project called IllumiRoom, shows off an Xbox console with a Kinect device. The Kinect is then used to scan the room and projects images outside the confines of the TV screen leading to an immersive experience. According to Microsoft, the effects shown in the video were captured live, not as a result of pre-rendered footage. If that is the case, we could be in for a treat in the near future, possibly in the next-generation Xbox console. Microsoft says that the “demo only covers educational and entertainment scenarios but the possibilities are endless.”
