Samsung unveiled its Wallet app for Android during its Developer Day at the Mobile World Congress. The app allows users to store event tickets, boarding passes, membership cards, and coupons in your virtual wallet, similar to Apple’s Passbook app for iOS. The similarities are striking, even down to the icon the app uses.
So far, Samsung has partnered up with Walgreens, Belly, Major League Baseball Advanced Media, Hotels.com, Lufthansa, Expedia, and Booking.com. Its partners will be able to access the Samsung Wallet API to provide real-time updates on membership card points, boarding pass changes, along with time and location-based push notifications. Similar to Apple’s Passbook app, Wallet isn’t supporting NFC payment either.
Currently, Wallet is only available as a preview for developers who can download the SDK and API guides, while it will take some time to appear in Samsung’s app store.
